Review :

Nice blend of comedy and horror without the gore.

I saw Office Outbreak at the 2006 Barebones Script to Screen International Film Festival and thought that it was a great film when compared to other low budget movies. The movie takes shots at Reality Television and the so called Reality TV stars that tend to have a huge since of entitlement to fame, Corporate American CEOs that rob their employees of their pension fund (think Enron) and spoofs Horror Films but not in a goofy way. If you watch the movie and expect it to be over the top than you are sure to enjoy Office Outbreak. Often times you can't hear or see the actors when it comes to these Independent movies but the production quality was for the most part top notch.

A missed chance.

The only tv movie (or movie) I know about Angolan's civil war - that is still going on after more than 30 years of horror - is a missed chance of getting a serious view about one of the most fascinating conflicts and countries worldwide. Having spent 5 months of my life working on relief in Angola, it is just frustrating seeing such a failure. But the redemption comes from showing a nearly realistic portrait of that situation, specially how the Unita guerrilla works. So... I recommend giving it a chance. I wonder where did they shoot this movie (it certainly looks similar to Angola, although not like Luanda's surrounding areas).

good comedy/horror movie

I really liked this movie simply because I identified and loved the Jack Brooks character so much. The purpose of the movie is to show a regular guy who is frustrated with the world around him trying to find his niche. What's so entertaining and hilarious is watching Jack blow in situations we all would like to blow up in while earnestly trying to trying to fit in and be normal.

I think this movie has a very strong Canadian sensibility which some Americans just don't see the humor in. I'm reminded a lot of Trailer Park Boys, which I personally find hilarious, but understandably some people just don't get. This kind of material is funny if you find the humor in lower/lower middle class life and the types of struggles you have to deal with when you belong to those classes.

This movie isn't a mindless slaughter-fest but instead focuses on the human element with humor and heart. If you enjoyed films like Shaun of the Dead that uses the horror genre as a backdrop to help bring out humorous yet relatable human struggles into focus then you'll like Jack Brooks. If your looking for a non-stop deluge of blood and a forgettable human characters whose only purpose is to be slaughtered then I suggest you look elsewhere.

A Black Comedy in honor of Arsène Lupin, the World's Quickest Rogue

Though not included in the blue-collar/white-collar employee segregate, the life of lower class people -which does not mean they are poor- is told in Sevimli Hirsiz "Lovely Rogue" within a very pleasant approach. Together with Nil Unal, Kemal Sunal and Bulent Kayabas forms a love trio. After Devlet Kusu(1980) Sunal and Kayabas reunions for a rivalry to win Nil Unal over.

In their tiny world of misfeasance, bohemians live for easy-money. They make a killing from robbery, rouser, counterfeiting, black marketing, playing dirty tricks, smoke and mirrors. Our hero Kemal Sunal, using his real-life name in the movie: "Kemal" who used to be an honest but poor man enters into this dangerous but amusing world pursuing a beautiful and dangerous girl. He falls for such a girl who steals his wallet. At the final scene remarkably, when she falls for her, this time he steals her bra. That was one unforgettably funny ending ever in such a black comedy.

At the beginning Kemal was only a rookie, a johnny-come-lately. It's very entertaining how Nil Unal trains Kemal to become as quick as Arsene Lupin. At first Kemal doesn't show his hidden talent for being a rogue. Those scenes of training for rogue-class were legendary as well as the signs of growing love between them. Formed a lovely couple, sweethearts Sunal and Unal gave very talented performances. Sexy and cheerfully acted Nil Unal has gained very positive critics. This was one of her best screen appearances.

Kartal Tibet leads and directs Kemal Sunal for best of all the other directors. The good company togetherness between Tibet and Sunal is clearly visible in the movie "Sabaniye(1984)" too.

One of the Best Romantic Films Ever Made

The late Abdelhalim Hafez gave his best performance in Abi Foq E-Shagarah,and also his wonderful songs that can make you feel the beauty of life. Even though Abdelhalim or "Halim" was too old to play the role of a college student at the age of 40,he was still the right choice. The film talks about Adel who goes to Alexandria to spend his summer vacation for the first time without his family who are staying in Cairo,he stays with his friends,including his girlfriend Amaa'l. But things change between them because Amaa'l sticks to traditions and prefers having the gang hang out with her and Adel who wants to be alone with her so he can declare his love to her,but she refuses this kind of love and leaves him. Adel feels terrible about this whole matter until he mixes with some young men who invite him to a night club, and there he meets Firdaus the dancer and he soon falls in love with her and then moves into her apartment and for the first time, he drinks,smokes and gambles. Both of them are in deeply in love with one another,and it shocks his friends and family, but Adel later on discovers Firdaus' darker side and tries to prevent his father who comes looking for him from being a victim to another dancer. The plot is written perfectly and it touches the emotions,including the scenes of pain and sadness. I would give this film 10 stars and I advise you to watch it if you're a fan of the talented singer and actor Abdelhalim Hafez.

It's just not good.

While it doesn't deserve the top of the bottom 100, it was in fact, a bad movie. I saw this movie for the soul reason of saying I saw it, and it wasn't as bad as people were trying to make it, but it really was lackluster at it's peak. Despite any racist claims, and all the controversy over this movie, it has a weak plot, terrible jokes, and was a waste of money.

As far as it being racist, well, I wasn't offended, but both whites AND blacks could easily be offended because it plays into huge stereo-types of both races. At times I could hear "We will overcome" intertwined within the plot-line, and agreeable with several other comments on this movie, it was just unnecessary. To those who say this movie isn't a "white/black thing", watch the movie again: ".. this is not about who's at infractions. No no no. This here is about black and white..." - Rev. J.J.Jackson played by Garrett Morris.

I'm a fan of stupid humor, actually, I love movies like Borat, Hot Fuzz, Friday, Caddy Shack, et cetera, but this movie is just an insult to comedy. I didn't even mind the racial undertones, but give me a break, this movie was REALLY about a quick buck. That is all, and for that I give it my 9 dollars, and a rating of 3.. still not the worst movie I've seen.. it's just not good.

Glimpses of superb talent

I wasn't overly impressed by this movie, mostly because of the script. Hollywood is not very imaginative when it comes to think outside the box, thus all films follow the magic and boring formula of "a beginning, a middle and an end". And when Hollywood decides to go wild and add something else to that concept, it usually ends up spoiling the movie. They did it in this flick. I'm not about to reveal anything but it has to do with Jason Biggs character.

Still, the movie has it's moments. All ghost movies has that in common that there comes a time when a medium or similar relates what the ghost is saying to a loved one who can't see it. We saw it done better in "Ghost" with Demi More, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, and more recently in much funnier movie "Ghosttown", with Ricky Gervais. This movie has that scene too, but the disappointing script passes over it too quickly and with not much result for the plot.

The highlight of the movie is the acting of two leads; Paul Rudd and the surprisingly funny Lake Bell.

I've long had a growing admiration for Rudd, who has developed a style similar to that of Chevy Chase at his best. If ever a serious production of sequels to the Fletch movies gets a green light, the casting agent would do wisely in considering Rudd.

Lake Bell is rather new to me, and I was severely impressed by her comedy talent. She could easily be pictured in over-the-top comedy things and take on a female lead over Jim Carreys character in "Dumb & dumber" or Ben Stillers in "There's something about Mary". The Farrelly brothers could have a new star in her.

In conclusion, this film was watchable. "Ghosttown" is a better movie in all considerations, but Rudd and Bell are a joy.

Terrible

I didn't find any redeeming qualities in this movie. I knew going in the movie was kind of based on the sophomoric premise that a sexually active young man was giving up sex for Lent. The movie also purports to be a comedy. So, almost all of the humor of the film revolves around Matt's (Josh Hartnett) attempt at celibacy, while apparently in his world every woman is young beautiful, and willing to have sex with him. So, you get lots of scenes of him gasping in frustration running away from women while putting ice down his pants. I found the humor witless, and below the standards of "Porky's" or typical teenage drive-in type movies.

Also, in this world were Matt lives, everyone knows about everyone else's sex lifes, they are freely discussed, and in Matt's case becomes the subject of world wide betting on the internet. While Matt seems to view this as an unfortunate turn of events, apparently he harbours no ill will towards his "friends" for publishing his plight. Or doesn't seem to be upset with them as they go out of their way to make him break is vow for Lent.

There is more to the "plot" of the movie, he meets a girl and falls in love but the movie screams the question "HOW CAN THEY BE IN LOVE IF THEY AREN'T HAVING SEX?" I'm not sure what the movie answered... it doesn't matter. The movie is absurd, the ending is meaningless.
