Thought provoking & Enjoyable! A must see for Alex Cox fans!

I really enjoyed this movie- as I do, all of the films of Alex Cox- a superb, tell-it-like-it-is, movie making Artist. This guy gets it, and finds a way in this film, to show us how ridiculous we are.

Some of the high teck movie lovers might need to amp-down some, for this beautifully shot road movie, for the lessons are silently text-ed between satire and farce. No big Hollywood budget here- but BIG in content, in regards to the refection it sheds back on it's viewers. Not to mention Steven Fierbergs capturing of the background of red-dusted Monument Valley-breathtaking!

Del Zamora as Mel Torres, anchors this cast, as he earnestly sets out to the desert to cast revenge on an old cruel childhood foe. This actor seems to hide in plain sight, with his natural and unassuming style-I like this real-man lead- show us some more of Zamora.

Sy Richardson has a voice like the dust and heat of the desert. Another interesting actor, who was cool and fast in the unconventional final shootout.

Jaclyn Jonet in her first feature and did a fine job. A realistic bratty kid at times and then an actress-deadpanning you into the camera. Another example, as Cox injects many unconventional, third-wall breaking techniques, speaking directly to us, as if to take us by the collar and give us a bit-of-a-shake.

Ed Pansullo is worth a mention too, for his sheer annoying honesty-as the back-seat driving, revenge seeking, chatterbox sidekick. He had me convinced he wasn't acting and gave me several good laughs.

Lastly, I recommend this film for those who are sick of the same old shod that's coming out of Hollywood. Independent films with social insight are priceless. For goodness sake, praise the filmmaker who still fully utilizes our right to free speech. Give us meat & potato actors on a spaghetti string budget, with some true moral & ethical nutrition over the fluff and illusion of Hollywood ANYDAY!

Another excellent Alex Cox film.

Hey, it worked for me!

Well, I wonder: if it had been about two male/female couples (as the play it was based on was), would "All Over the Guy" have gotten such a critical reception? More likely it would've been seen as an honorable, at times sparkling, addition to the screen tradition of romantic comedies -- which is what I think it is. Sure, the characters are wildly neurotic and frequently annoying; so are people in real life, especially when they're in love. Is it distracting that Richard Ruccolo (who does indeed give an exquisitely tuned performance) is so good-looking? Actually, I thought it was necessary; Tom is so screwed up that we need the physical beauty to help relate to him. Do the women steal the movie? Well, with the likes of Andrea Martin, Lisa Kudrow, Christina Ricci and Doris Roberts in support, what do you think -- and how can you lose, especially since Dan Bucatinsky's script is so frequently sharp?

Forget the nay-sayers and see this one. It's a very good romantic comedy, at times maybe even a great one.

Entertaining Middle Eastern escapism... created in Mexico!

"Los legionarios" is the fourth film featuring Marco Antonio Campos and Gaspar Henaine as Viruta and Capulina. It is also noteworthy for being Chespirito's film debut as a screenwriter. Another interesting aspect about this film is that Viruta and Capulina are billed after rumbera star María Antonieta Pons, the film's female lead. Pons portrays Sheila, a beautiful Arab noblewoman whose abductor is her former fiancé, a prince named Omar who owns a harem. He wants to marry her but she rejects and will only accept if he gets rid of his harem. Viruta and Capulina are deserters of the Foreign Legion and disguise themselves as odalisques in order to escape but are mistakenly taken for slaves and sold to Omar's harem...

This film is certainly entertaining. It has a good plot and funny dialogue and sets that are both accurate and lush. Donna Behar, a Lebanese singer, gives a strong and competent performance as one of Omar's odalisques. Her singing is perhaps one of the most mesmerizing moments in the entire history of Mexican cinema. She beautifully sings "Paloma cu-cu-rru-cu-cu" (the song that Lola Beltrán later popularized) in both Spanish and Arabic (for which she composed the lyrics). Bárbara Codina also gives a great and believable performance as Farida, Omar's scorned odalisque who hates Sheila.

How to get an awful mess remaking a good film

I suspected 2002 "Rollerball" was an ugly movie, but not that ugly! Well, let's get rid of the only merit of the movie: the presence of Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, beautiful and tremendously sexy. Indeed, a statuesque female warrior is always sexy, all the more with that alluring scar on her face.

The tragic fact with "Rollerball" is that the story should be good, per se. The authors took the ideas from the original (and true) 1975 "Rollerball". They deleted the political and moral messages, which were somewhat a weakness of the 1975 film, and placed the story in some remote countries of a near future, allegedly ruled by violence, greed, abuse. But the way the film is made turns it into a disaster.

There is an over-long (and boring) preamble, with a race down-hill of some cretinous youngsters, in San Francisco. This is a great narrative mistake. The audience is anxious to know about the Rollerball game, and you excruciate them with idiots, easily found, alas!, in everyday life. In the next scene Jonathan (a remarkably blunt Chris Klein) has become the undisputed superstar of the Rollerball. We don't understand anything of the rules of the game. As a matter of fact, we don't understand anything of the plot! The guys on the screen keep talking about other guys, seemingly killed by the bad ones, or something like that. Who are who? The audience utterly ignores it. The next scene (say: someone escaping from somewhere) has no logical connection with the previous one. I bet that in the final editing of the movie a good 30 minutes were cut, making the story a complete mess. The only thing we get is that the villains deliberately provoke accidents on the field to raise the TV audience of the game. And then there is the lousy greenish nocturnal scene. Up to my knowledge, the worst visual idea in the history of cinema. Some 15 minutes of sufferings for the innocent viewer. The ending is even more ludicrous than expected.

But what is really incredible, even in a terrible movie, is that, in spite of the enormous technological improvements, the scenes of the game, and related special effects, are by far less spectacular, exciting, violent than those of the 1975 "Rollerball". The possibly interesting presence of women playing Rollerball is not exploited at all. The uniforms of the teams are worse than horrible, they are stupid.

There's nothing to save in "Rollerball". Just take Romijn-Stamos and bring her to another movie (keeping the scar on her face, if possible).

Falsity at Its Best

Love films. Always have, always will. Would like to love Romanian films too, because it just feels good to hear a film unfold in my very own language. But things are as they are and I can't make them any different. All I can try is change my "optic" of things, which I can't seem to do in this particular case. Some films sway you to, others don't. It's just as simple as that.

In Caranfil's style, "Restul e tacere" is a jolly new film about film, but also about jolly old Romania and the people inhabiting it. It looks good and is decently acted, as a young protagonist tries to make a film about the Romanian battle of independence, against the Turks, which leads him on a road of enlightenment about the people of that world. A lot of character types pop up in this morally vile Romania which bear a lot of criticism to the contemporary one as well.

What disappoints me is that subtlety is often sacrificed for clarity, with an ending so full of itself that it just undermines many of the things said and done along the way. It is undeniable that the film has moments of poignant humor and all in all manages to sketch a very true form of the ill society which rules the land, now and then, but it isn't "round" enough to be placed on the shelf it wishes to place itself.

I may be overly harsh about Caranfil's latest effort, but I do not wish to ignore the underlying themes and motifs he ties in with the story, the allegorical parallels of other stages of the world and some of the great single elements which are part of it. However it isn't enough - as far as I'm concerned - to be really smart about the things you say, if the way you say them doesn't fit.

One of the best movies of the year.

I just saw 'Spin Cycle' recently and it was really funny. Maxine Bahns was the best! Lochlyn Munroe and Sarah Chalke, both from 'Stand Against Fear' and together again in this movie. Both were really good too. I don't remember if this movie went into theaters or not, but if it didn't, it should have been. Probably the funniest movie of the year. I give it 9/10.

decent acting is all that carried this movie

The acting by Brian Bosworth, Shannon Whirry, Ciff Robertson and Michael Dorn was pretty solid despite the script they had to work with.

Steve Latshaw wrote a very pedestrian script filled with weak clichés and one liners. The dialogue is only part of what brought this film down.

The direction was horrid. Fred Olen Ray, who had directed such classics as Vampire Vixens from Venus and Bikini Drive In, does a horrid job directing this movie. The cuts, the angles, the closeups - everything he did was pedestrian. The music, the sound editing, everything was bad.

If it wasn't for some solid acting from a few select cast members this wouldn't be worth the time. As is, it is a fair little action flick. Just don't expect much. At all ...

Ken Marino and David Wain deliver ridiculous comedy

This movie has Jeff Reigert (Paul Rudd) introducing ten stories, each one corresponds to one of the Ten Commandments. Each one is like an extended sketch from a comedy show. I find most of them just run on and on.

With all the top rate acting talents, the most important people are the writing team of Ken Marino and David Wain. Their humor is wildly inappropriate and deliberately so. They don't always do it for me. A lot of times, I find they do ridiculous for ridiculous' sake. I like them when they anchor their stories more in reality. That's not the case in this movie. This is mostly unfunny as they flail away with one over the top concept after another. I did smirk a few times.

Even funnier than Scary Movie! (some spoilers)

I just got back from "Scary Movie 2" just about an hour ago and I'm still laughing from thinking about it.

The cameos by James Woods, Veronica Cartwright, and Natasha Lyonne are funny enough just to pay for admission. But that's before the film starts to get funnier as the Wayans spoof "The Haunting," "Hannibal," "Save the Last Dance," and "Charlie's Angels." The only (semi) downside to the movie was that the sex jokes in this were racier than the ones in the original film, especially the spoof of "Titanic" that ends very messily.

But besides that, "Scary Movie 2" may probably be the most fun you will probably have at the movies this summer.

A really funny movie that people with and without kids can enjoy

I just saw this film at a screening and it is awesome. I laughed out loud and found myself quoting the movie with friends for days after. Lines like I am not a genius and naming Alex Trabec as one of the great geniuses was very cool. I am excited to buy it because this is one of those movies like Christmas Vacation that you find yourself watching even when its not Christmas. I think it is cool that Shatner is on it because isn't he Jewish? He did a really great job and he really ads to the pacing of the film to help it never seem to slow. Make sure you really pay attention to the artifacts those were a crack up. The cool thing about this movie is I think everyone will like it whether they have kids or not. I like the feel of the film as well because it kind of has that office sort of feel but they make some of the funnies moments when they are interviewing the characters. The wife is awesome make sure you pay attention to what his wife does when he is explaining about gravity I laughed out loud. Anyway it is a great film I give it 4 stars.

Fantastic movie.

This movie just screened at the Florida Film Festival in Orlando, Fl. The crowd applauded, laughed and cheered throughout. This should be a big hit if it has a wide release in May. I loved the fact the film was set in the mid-80's, when I was also a student in junior high school. The soundtrack to the film was a lot of fun with hits by Depeche Mode and Cars by Gary Neuman. Also, I swear that I saw the band members of Travis in a scene shot in the faculty lounge of the school. I think the film is equally rewarding for both children and adults and will also be appreciated by anyone who love the art of cinema. I honestly can't imagine anyone not being moved and amused by this little film.

Good First Time Effort

I thought this movie was fun and interesting. It has great tongue in cheek humor that not everyone will understand or appreciate. I thought it told a uniquely twisted story that not many people would have the nerve to make. Sure you can tell it's low budget, but just getting a movie made, any movie - is a great feat. If you're willing to give small movies a chance, see this one if you can. Thankfully, it DID manage to make it out of Oklahoma - I saw it in San Francisco.
