Review :

A Day of Judgment needs to be viewed and critiqued in a spiritual light.

The object of this movie was to impress upon its audience the importance of repentance when persons are brought to the knowledge of their sin. It gave examples of various sinful situations and how the people responded when shown the ultimate results of those sins. Most of the actors in "A Day of Judgment" were not professional actors, as is obvious; and for some, it was their first time acting in a movie, as was the case for my mother who played Mrs. Clay. She had been a stage actress from a child and reveled in playing comedy. This was not her 'cup of tea' but she was willing to be a part. The movie has an important message which can get lost in the shuffle of arrogant criticism by those who have no spiritual insight.

Review :

The sadness of immigration to the big city.

This movie was a surprise hit in Mexico because it dealt with a theme that had been touched little: the immigration, of mostly impoverished people, mostly Native American, to Mexico City.

The movie follows one of these people and how things go from bad to worse from him while trying to earn a decent living. Hecto Suarez chamaleonic skills are put to good use here.

The Mil Usos of the tittle refers to the 1000 different little jobs that these people have to do in order to survive.

Witty and uplifting, with a happyish ending, it is worth a look, remembering the tremendous restrictions Mexican Cinema was facing on that era both economically and politically. This is basically as good as it could get for private producers, which is quite depressing to say the least.

Review :

Well worth a watch but maybe only the one.

Spirited, likable erotic outing from Nikkatsu. None of the hard edged violence to be seen in almost all the previous releases from Impulse, this even has comedic elements. Plenty of flesh on display and pretty varied too, some 'soaplands' stuff and even some adult baby added to the mix. Supposedly part of the Japanese 'ama' genre, it has to be said that most of the pearl diving going on here is of the sexual variety. Nevertheless just enough local colour, including a giant phallus procession and unusual use (or misuse) of temple facilities. Jasper Sharp mentions in his excellent book, Behind The Pink Curtain and repeats in his fine film notes here, that a more appropriate title translation here would be, Lusty Ama: Loincloth Festival, but we won't come to blows over a snappy title change. Well worth a watch but maybe only the one.

Fair adaptation of a childhood classic.

Almost all actor Jean-Claude Brialy 's films revolve around childhood:"Eglantine" ,his charming debut featured an old grandma (Valentine Tessier) who used to gather her grandsons and granddaughters in her mansion.The fact that he adapted the comtesse de Segur's works afterwards made sense :the world of this old-fashioned but still very pleasant writer is that of the children."Les malheurs de Sophie" is the first part of a trilogy which encompasses "les petites filles modèles" and" les vacances" ,which is probably the best of the three books.

The very structure of "les malheurs de Sophie" makes it a book very hard to bring to the screen.Jacqueline Audry did it before Brialy before in the fifties ,but her movie is nowhere to be seen or found nowadays :judged by its screenplay alone,it seems that Audry had managed better than Brialy.The latter did not try to change the book and there's the rub:it is made of short scenes ,all built on the same pattern :temptation/fault/punishment.Sophie is a little girl,naiver than nasty;sometimes abetted by cousin Paul,she always gets into mischief,although the boy is much wiser than she is.

So Brialy's work is repetitive and sometimes dull which the book was not.It becomes monotonous and lacks tempo,gusto and the darker side of the writer (her book is some kind of autobiography)The ending is different from the book too as Sophie ,Paul and their parents leave France for America where an inheritance is waiting for them.

Sophie's story continues -in a very dramatic way as she loses her mother in a wreckage then her father -in "les petites filles modèles" where she is mistreated by a shrew,Madame Fichini,before being received in a generous lady 's home ,and in "les vacances" where she meets again Paul,survivor of the sinking of the ship too.

Brialy would adapt another Segur book in the eighties with "un bon petit diable'

A little-known film that deserves more...

I only took the time to track down this film, because one of the writers is my headmaster at my private school. He attended that same school as a child and has also taught there. This movie is representitive of our school. A North American Co-Ed School with British roots; strict but with heart.

The movie never focuses deeply on one character, but jumps from thread to thread, all of which are easily believed private school situations. At the beginning this can be annoying, keeping the characters straight takes a few scenes (uniforms and all)but the deeper you go into the film, the more satisfying they get.

The movie has its funny and dramatic parts. The acting is good and the setting is perfect. Good authentic Rugby scenes.

I recommend it if you have any interest in private school life, which is honestly the lead in the movie. Obscure and hard to find pick it up, it is worth a look. 8/10.

The screenplay is only pretext to see Tânia Alves and Carla Camurati naked and the voyeurism of Vera Maria Gatta is tiresome. Surprisingly this film has been nominated to the Golden Kikito in the category Best Film. My vote is three.

First I must admit I saw this one dubbed in English, although I doubt it made any difference. No plot, no character development, no gags, boring acting and soforth.

I do not consider myself a person who would use this phrase lightly, but this one was probably the worst film I ever did see. Unbelievably they actually released this on video in Finland when video was young...

After BOBBY(1973) which sort of started a trend of youth romantic films Many romantic films started taking precedence

LOVE STORY Directed by legendary Rajendra Kumar to launch his son Kumar Gaurav and Vijayata Pandit

The film is typical love story but it's very entertaining especially how the couple escape and then the clash of egos, the way the couple realise they are in love and the climax

There is also a comic track of Amjad Khan who is hilarious

Direction by Rajendra Kumar is good Music was a big asset

Kumar Gaurav(real name Manoj Rajendra Tuli) did a good job playing Bunty though he does seem too awkward in scenes yet he suits his part Vijayata Pandit is good too in her role though her voice annoys Danny Denzongpa is superb and Rajendra Kumar is as usual Amjad Khan is hilarious

The British did not give India its independence on a silver platter. Independence was the result of a long and bloody battle. "Kranti" is the story of how two men became soldiers in that battle. When Laxman Singh conditionally permits the British to use the port for trading purposes, Sangha finds out that the British are taking out gold and jewelery and bringing in ammunition, he puts a stop to this. Sentenced to death, he escapes and forms a group of revolutionaries who have only one motto - drive the British out of India. best patriotic film ever

This movie along with Roti, Kapada aur Makaan is amogst Manoj Kumars best ever! The script by Salim Javed, the music by Laxmikant Pyarelaal, the direction by Manoj Kumar himself and all of the actors (Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, Dheeraj Kumar, Pradeep Kumar, Prem Chopra, Kunal Goswami, Sulochna and Kamini Kaushal amongst others) are perfect. A lost and found styory set during the independence struggle it just doesn't get better than this. Manoj is really Bharat! Detail : Kamini Kaushal who has been Manoj his screen mom in all the films Manoj made was also in this movie but not as his mom. That role went to Nirupa Roy. And the reason was that Dilip Kumar was playing the role of Manoj his father (the two of them were the leading men in Aadmi also, both in love with Waheeda Rehmaan), and Dilip and Kamini Kaushal had an affair 20 to 30 years before this movie that did not end well. Actually it caused quite a riot in its day because she was a hindu and he a Muslim. Back to the film, all the songs are gems but the best of the lot is Lata and Nitin Mukesh's (father of Neil Nitin Mukesh) Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi, Pyaar Karle Ghadi Do Ghadi
